Approximately 399,000 cubic yards of sand was successfully placed to restore nearly one mile of Avon’s oceanfront shoreline through Dare County’s 2026 maintenance beach renourishment project. Completed in just 28 days, the project strengthens storm protection, supports public beach access, and helps protect NC Highway 12 and the surrounding community.
Restoring Avon’s Shoreline
Using two ocean-certified hopper dredges, Liberty Island and Amelia Island, Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company placed compatible beach-quality sand along the shoreline between Avon Fishing Pier and the project’s southern limit near Greenwood Place. The completed nourishment restores the engineered beach berm, improves storm resilience, and supports recreation, tourism, and future storm recovery efforts.
Construction progressed largely as planned, with Liberty Island completing most of the nourishment before Amelia Island finished the remaining work following a scheduled vessel change. Favorable weather and efficient operations allowed the project to be completed with minimal disruption to residents, visitors, and oceanfront property owners.

The Avon Beach Renourishment Project represents another milestone in Dare County’s long-term shoreline management program. Building on previous restoration efforts, the project helps maintain a wider, more resilient beach while protecting critical infrastructure, preserving public access, and supporting the long-term health of Hatteras Island’s coastline.
