DeBordieu Colony, SC
Large-scale nourishment and low-profile groins restored a continuous dry-sand beach, reduced storm risk, and extended renourishment intervals.
At a Glance
For decades, CSE has guided DeBordieu Colony's coastal strategy, advancing from early erosion evaluations to a fully permitted stabilization program at the vulnerable south end. The integrated approach combined substantial sand placement with low-profile groins to rebuild protective beach width, enhance storm defenses, and significantly extend the interval between future nourishment projects.
Overcoming Chronic Erosion, Armoring, and Long-Standing Opposition
DeBordieu Colony battled severe, persistent erosion that wiped out dry-sand beach and left oceanfront properties increasingly exposed—even with a seawall in place. For decades, long-term solutions stalled amid legal challenges and concerns over the downcoast impacts of groins. The challenge was to deliver a durable, permitted restoration strategy that stopped erosion, protected neighboring habitats and homes, and aligned community and regulatory priorities.
Adaptive Nourishment and Groin Stabilization
CSE delivered a science-driven, long-term solution pairing large-scale nourishment with low-profile groins shaped to match natural beach slopes. Detailed erosion analysis, modeling, and field data informed the design, supported by rigorous monitoring to manage downcoast impacts. The project restored a stable dry-sand beach, strengthened storm resilience, and improved long-term shoreline performance.
Reclaiming Continuous Dry-Sand Beach and Coastal Habitat
The project replaced exposed seawall conditions with a continuous dry-sand beach and restored wildlife habitat along DeBordieu Colony's armored south end. Stronger sand retention and longer renourishment intervals have delivered lasting shoreline performance while easing erosion pressure on neighboring areas. Today, the stabilized coast offers greater storm protection for oceanfront property and infrastructure, supported by ongoing monitoring and adaptive management.
Project Transformation
See the dramatic difference our coastal engineering solutions made.
The restored shoreline demonstrates how integrated beach nourishment and low-profile groins can rebuild protective beach width, reduce storm vulnerability, restore habitat, and deliver long-term shoreline stability.
"Decades of study and stakeholder coordination enabled a private community to stabilize its shoreline with relatively small structures that provide sustainable coastal protection."
