For decades, CSE has led DeBordieu Colony's coastal strategy, delivering engineering and permitting expertise for lasting shoreline protection. A large-scale project placed offshore sand along nearly 9,000 feet of beach and installed strategically designed groins to combat chronic south-end erosion. Ongoing monitoring and mitigation maximize sand retention, support downcoast bypassing, and reduce future renourishment costs.
Stabilizing Debidue's Vulnerable South Shore
DeBordieu Colony's south end faced chronic, inlet-driven erosion that nourishment alone could not solve. Regulatory and legal hurdles stalled earlier stabilization efforts, leaving infrastructure and habitat exposed to storm damage. The mission: deliver a long-term strategy that rebuilds protective beach width, safeguards habitat, reduces renourishment frequency, and limits downcoast impacts.
Long-Term Protection Through Smart Engineering
CSE executed a comprehensive stabilization strategy at DeBordieu Colony, pairing large-scale offshore nourishment with three sheet-pile groins at the chronically erosive south end. Beach-compatible sand restored a substantial stretch of shoreline, rebuilding protective width, strengthening storm defense, supporting habitat, and encouraging downcoast bypassing. A rigorous monitoring and mitigation program maximizes performance, reduces future renourishment frequency, and delivers sustainable, long-term coastal resilience.

The stabilization effort rebuilt a wide, resilient beach protecting homes, infrastructure, and vital recreational shoreline along DeBordieu Colony's most vulnerable stretch of coastline. Strategic nourishment, paired with groin-based sand retention, curbs chronic erosion while sustaining shorebird and sea turtle habitat. Extending renourishment cycles from 5 years to 10-15 years, the project generates substantial long-term cost savings and enduring coastal value.
