At a Glance

CSE led the design and construction of a landmark South Carolina stabilization project, reviving groins alongside nourishment after decades of ineffective erosion control. Innovative steel and composite groin clusters were shaped to match natural beach profiles, stabilizing key recreation areas while preserving downcoast sand movement. Monitoring confirms reduced erosion and on-time, on-budget delivery.

Reversing Chronic Erosion After Repeated Nourishment Failures

Decades of federal and state nourishment couldn't keep pace with accelerating erosion, leaving oceanfront beaches increasingly vulnerable. The solution required reintroducing groins—largely dormant since the 1970s—using modern designs that complemented nourishment and natural processes. The goal: stabilize critical access points while preserving downcoast sand supply and the beach's natural character.

Challenge

Clustered Groins Paired with Nourishment for Targeted Stabilization

CSE deployed a hybrid stabilization strategy of pairing beach nourishment with strategically placed groin clusters at key access points. Groins were shaped to mirror natural beach slopes, kept low-profile to minimize visual impact, and built with materials selected for strength and constructability. The result locked in stability where it mattered most while allowing natural shoreline dynamics to continue along adjacent beaches.

Approach

Sustained Shoreline Stability Without Disrupting Coastal Processes

The project delivered proven, long-term erosion reduction within each groin cluster while keeping natural sand movement flowing along neighboring shorelines. Monitoring confirms steady downcoast sand supply and stable, safe recreational beaches at key access points. Delivered on time and on budget, the project set a new benchmark for smart, balanced beach stabilization in South Carolina.

From repeated nourishment losses to lasting shoreline stability, strategically designed groin clusters transformed vulnerable beach areas while preserving natural sand movement along adjacent shores.

"With beach erosion threatening the base of a historic lighthouse, CSE worked with SCPRT to design and construct a series of groins to stabilize the most used portions of Hunting Island."
