At a Glance

The project revitalized Seabrook Island's aging seawall by restoring armor stone, riprap, filter layers, and crest elevations to permitted standards. These upgrades stabilized thousands of feet of shoreline and reduced exposure to wave attack and storm damage. Strategic planting of dune grass behind the wall supported habitat recovery and strengthened long-term coastal resilience.

Addressing Severe Erosion and a Degraded Legacy Seawall

Decades of storm impacts left Seabrook Island's oceanfront seawall uneven, exposed, and vulnerable to wave attack. Recent nor'easters displaced armor stone, damaged filter layers, and lowered crest elevations below permitted limits. The challenge was stabilizing thousands of feet of aging structure while protecting adjacent properties, restoring beach and dune function, and meeting modern maintenance standards.

Challenge

Targeted Rehabilitation of an Existing Seawall System

The approach focused on restoring the seawall's original design intent through targeted repairs rather than full reconstruction. Displaced armor stone was reset, riprap and filter layers repaired, and crest elevations rebuilt to permitted limits to strengthen wave resistance. Planting dune grass behind the wall accelerated dune recovery and enhanced overall shoreline resilience.

Approach

Fortifying a Vital Shoreline Defense

The project restored Seabrook Island's oceanfront seawall by resetting displaced armor stone, repairing filter layers, and rebuilding crest elevations to permitted standards. More than 5,500 feet of shoreline were stabilized, reducing exposure to wave attack and storm erosion. Dune grass planting accelerated habitat recovery and strengthened long-term coastal resilience.

"Piecemeal construction of the seawall between the 1970s and 1980s left portions vulnerable to overtopping and scouring; repairs implemented a uniform wall profile and stone size for the first time."
